Journal editor-in-chief Villanueva dies at 83

PHILIPPINE Journalists Inc. editor-in-chief, Augusto “Gus” Villanueva, died on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022. He was 83 years old.

Villanueva, or Sir Gus, began his career as a reporter in 1955 under Manila Times’ Sports editor Ricky Llanos. In 1972, Villanueva became the editor of the Times Journal.

He was also one of the founders of People’s Journal and People’s Tonight, which he and a group of other prominent colleagues founded in 1978 and 1979.

In the late 1970s, Villanueva became president of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) and started the weekly PSA Forum. The PSA presented Villanueva with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

His remains will be kept at home after his cremation. The inurnment date will be announced soon.
